Associate Kelly Geary has a busy practice as a senior associate, working on commercial litigation and construction law matters. To balance that, she set a goal to visit the southernmost continent on Earth and has come back from Antarctica with no regrets.
“It was absolutely breathtaking.”
The multi-day expedition dropped her into a world of towering icebergs, pristine landscapes, and unique wildlife.
“One of my best memories,” Geary recalls, “was taking a zodiac boat out and having a humpback whale come right up to us. It just floated there, only four or five feet away. Everyone sat in silence for about half an hour while it rested beside us.”
When asked what drew her to Antarctica, Geary said the opportunity to step foot on the Antarctic Peninsula and observe wildlife like penguins, seals, whales, and exotic birds was simply irresistible. “It’s part of my personal goal to travel to all seven continents,” she said.
This adventure left a lasting impression on Geary and she says overcoming challenges made it even more special. “Traversing the Drake Passage by boat is no joke,” she warned. “We were lucky with only 10-foot waves, but the boat after us went through the ‘Drake Shake’—they hit 30-foot waves!”
Geary had advice for anyone considering a similar adventure. “Definitely go. You won’t regret it. It’s truly the trip of a lifetime.”
